Understanding Sports Nutrition

Sports nutrition is an important element for every athlete and health-conscious individual to perform their best, achieve their athletic goals, and maintain well-balanced nutrition. For those looking to optimize their physical activity and health, sports nutrition is a great practice that involves eating habits, hydration, and supplementation to maximize physical activity and enhance recovery.

Maintaining a healthy balance between antioxidants and free radicals is important for athletic performance, if free radicals are allowed to accumulate beyond physiological levels, they can negatively affect performance and recovery from exercise.

Astaxanthin to the Rescue

If you’re looking for a boost of energy to tackle physical activity and longer physical engagement, you can rely on the natural power of AstaReal® Astaxanthin. Our premium ingredient is clinically proven to promote endurance by supporting the energy-producing mitochondria in muscle. Astaxanthin helps protect the mitochondria’s ability to use fat for energy over sugar, which is more efficient for endurance athletes.

In addition, after intense physical activity, AstaReal® Astaxanthin is proven to reduce muscle soreness by neutralizing free radicals during and after a workout. Therefore, natural astaxanthin alleviates exercise-induced inflammation that leads to DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and gets you back into your daily physical activity.

Study Highlights

Antioxidant supplementation, such as astaxanthin have been clinically proven to alleviate muscle injury following intense exercise. In a recent study, we examined the effects of astaxanthin on a 4-week course of 12mg daily supplementation on 19 resistance-trained men (mean ± SD: age, 22.6 ± 2.2 y). Subjects completed four trials, with trials One and Three designed to induce muscle damage, consisting of a one repetition maximum test (1RM) for leg-press, followed by five sets of ten repetitions at 65% of 1RM. Trials Two and Four were performance trials, conducted 48 h later and consisting of repetitions to failure at 65%, 70%, and 75% of 1RM.

The results demonstrated that AX may enhance recovery by reducing DOMS without detriment to performance in resistance-trained men.
