Understanding Healthy Aging in Pets

Aging is associated with an increase in oxidative stress because the body’s own antioxidant capacity becomes less effective at clearing free radicals. Reduced blood flow with age makes it harder to nourish tissues and clear metabolic waste, and higher levels of systemic inflammation can trigger further free radical buildup.
Free radicals that aren’t kept in check can damage mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cell. Mitochondria are important for energy production across the body, supporting mobility, vision, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function.
Astaxanthin to the Rescue

AstaReal® Astaxanthin may help support aging muscles and maintain mobility by promoting mitochondrial health and nourishing blood flow that feeds muscles and other tissues.1
AstaReal® Astaxanthin works in eye muscles to promote comfort, hydration, visual function, and dynamic focus as dogs age.2
Several studies suggest that AstaReal® Astaxanthin may support a healthy blood lipid profile, which is important as dogs age and become more sedentary. In healthy sedentary dogs, AstaReal® Astaxanthin reduced triglyceride levels, as well as oxidative stress and inflammation markers.3
Finally, AstaReal® Astaxanthin can cross the blood brain barrier to neutralize free radicals and support brain health. Owners whose dogs supplemented with AstaReal® Astaxanthin have reported that their dogs are more responsive and alert following 60 days of astaxanthin supplementation.4
Study Highlight

A study found benefits of natural astaxanthin on mitochondrial health in 14 Beagles, both young (~2.97yrs) and geriatric (~10.71yrs). Dogs fed natural astaxanthin had increased ATP production by 12% and 14% in young and geriatric dogs, respectively. Oxidation of proteins in the mitochondrial membrane decreased by 35% in geriatric dogs and by 45% in younger dogs. Supplementing with dietary natural astaxanthin also boosted levels of endogenous antioxidants in young dogs. Geriatric dogs fed natural astaxanthin had reduced oxidative stress markers.5
