Understanding Skin Health

Skin is the body’s largest organ, and it has direct contact with the outside world. That means skin faces daily challenges in a dynamic environment. To stay healthy, skin needs to be resilient and able to bounce back from those challenges.

The visible changes in skin, such as dryness, fine lines, and sagging start with invisible molecular events, like oxidative damage caused by free radicals. The buildup of free radicals can damage skin cell proteins, lipids, DNA, and other components. Over time, oxidative damage to skin can contribute to visible signs of aging.

Astaxanthin to the Rescue

AstaReal® astaxanthin acts on all skin layers when ingested, helping to maintain healthy-looking skin by promoting skin hydration, elasticity, and smoothness. Some antioxidants can’t reach skin cells because they are blocked by the cell membrane, which are made of lipids. Astaxanthin is a lipid-soluble nutrient with a unique structure that’s a perfect match for your skin’s cell membranes! Natural astaxanthin can be used topically or taken orally to help maintain healthy skin.

Study Highlight

Natural astaxanthin supplements are available in many forms, including capsules, gummies, chocolates, and drinks. In one double blind placebo-controlled study, healthy women (ages 30-49) drank a beverage containing 3mg/day AstaReal® Astaxanthin every day for 8 weeks or a placebo beverage without astaxanthin.

After 8 weeks of supplementation, those in the astaxanthin group experienced an 18% improvement in skin elasticity, which was significantly better than the 2% improvement observed in the placebo group. The astaxanthin group also had a 3% increase in skin total water content and slowed water loss through evaporation from the skin by 5%. The improvement in hydration in the astaxanthin group was significantly better that the change observed in the placebo group, who experienced an 11% decrease in water content and 20% greater rate of evaporation of water through skin.1

What’s Next

Astaxanthin gummies are the next big thing. Astaxanthin used to only be available in capsule form, but AstaReal has been innovating together with talented gummy food scientists since 2017, bringing the first astaxanthin gummies to market. Today there are many astaxanthin gummy options available, including brands like Neutrogena, OPositiv, Proceller8, and Hilo, to name a few.
